Tuesday Tarot…On Thursday

The Minor Arcana Cards also known as the Suit Cards are all associated with an Element.

Pentacles are associated with the element of Earth. Earth is the energy that keeps us grounded. All Pentacle cards deal with the Realm of Material Things such as Work and Finance. Pentacles describe your material world, physical body and finances. If Pentacle cards show up in your reading they are asking you to use your common sense.

Wands are associated with the element of Fire. Fire is the element of transformation or change. All Wand Cards deal with the Realm of Intuition, such as Imagination and Creativity. Wands describe your Spirit, motion and action. If Wands show up in your reading it is time to do something.

Cups are associated with the element of Water. Water is the element of emotion or rather the flow of our feelings. All Cup Cards deal with the Realm of Emotion, such as Love and Relationships. Cups describe your emotional state regarding relationships. If Cups show up in your reading it’s time to listen to your intuitive heart.

Swords are associated with the element of Air. Air is the element that governs our thinking. All Sword Cards deal with the Realm of Thought, such as Ideas and Attitudes. Swords describe your thoughts and state of mind. If Swords show up in your reading it is time to make a plan and let go of worry.

Each of the Suit cards have a number and each number has an overall significance.

We will address the Court cards later…but as a quick overview…each suit has four court cards consisting of a Page, Knight, Queen and King. The Court cards can be either people that are in your life, or aspects of yourself that you need to change.

All Pages are represented by the number 1 plus their suits element. As a 1 they represent messages, new beginnings, or young people or your childhood, innocence, exuberance or sometimes wounds or fears. Pages are a reflection of the Major Arcana Fool.

All Knights are represented by the number 2 plus their suits element. As a 2 they represent decisions, balance and movement. Knights are a reflection of Major Arcana cards that also deal with the themes of balance and decisions much like the Justice card.

All Queens are represented by the number 3 plus their suits element. As a 3 they represent creativity, feminine energy and fertility. Queens are a refection of the Major Arcana Empress.

All Kings are represented by the number 4 plus their suits element. As a 4 they represent Stability, masculine energy and authority. Kings are a reflection of the Major Arcana Emperor.

The Minor Arcana or Suit cards are believed to have been added at a much later date to enhance or flesh out the original Major Arcana Cards. Remember that the Major Arcana Cards represent “Us, Individually” walking through the different cycles of life and are represented as different Archetypes/Milestones that are commonly known and relatable to us all.

How did we get the suit cards if they came later than the major arcana? Well, perhaps some spiritual mastermind decided to have some extra cards fashioned to help you navigate those tricky spots, life is messy after all and sometimes it is difficult to see the proverbial forest through the trees. or….bored aristocracy having nothing better to do devised games that started rumours and innuendo, inducing scandal and intrigue at court when there wasn’t any, inadvertently developed this delightful addition. Who knows…lots of theories, not much fact. We have them and we use them and they always seem to amaze us with their uncanny ability to reflect our current situation in life.

Next week we will do a quick overview of the Court Cards…
